GritGateway — African Talent Intelligence Platform
GritGateway scores the resilience and character of African students using a validated psychometric framework, then matches them to verified scholarships, fellowships, and mentors who have already won the opportunities they are pursuing.
What was actually broken.
For most African students, the systems that decide who gets seen were built somewhere else, for someone else. Standardised tests reward access to preparation resources, not the effort it took to reach the exam room. A student who taught themselves from photocopied textbooks and still passed scores the same as one who had a tutor — and the admissions committee sees neither story. Roughly a third of African scholarship applications run into scams or dead ends before they reach a real institution. The talent is not missing. What is missing is infrastructure that can measure it honestly, verify the opportunities attached to it, and connect the two without a black box in the middle.

How it was built.
The architecture, the constraints it was chosen against, and the trade-offs that came with it.
The scoring core, GritScore™, is a psychometric framework validated against the Short Grit Scale developed by Angela Duckworth at the University of Pennsylvania, using a study of 541 respondents in Cameroon — the first published normative reference for that instrument in that population. High-stakes scoring runs under strict, auditable rules rather than being delegated to a general-purpose model; five dimensions — Resourcefulness, Agency, Tenacity, Adaptive Growth, and Community Vision — are scored with behavioural rubrics and full audit transparency, so a student can see exactly why their score is what it is. Separate models handle essay coaching and guidance, keeping the scoring logic inspectable and the generative layer contained. The application is built on Next.js, deployed on Vercel, and ships as a PWA so it works on the devices and connections African students actually have. The platform is bilingual in English and French. Partner institutions get cohort dashboards at no cost.
